Summary
University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy in St. Louis is currently seeking a Lead Maintenance Mechanic to be a hands on leader and maintenance technician Sunday through Wednesday in an exciting college environment. The position requires work order assignments and reporting of maintenance staff and performs skilled work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and structural systems as well as assists with event setup/teardown.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Perform maintenance work (installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair) of electrical, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing and refrigeration control systems by inspecting and testing elements of those systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, monitoring the performance of heating, cooling, and related systems by interpreting the energy management system and building automation system, troubleshooting problems, and making adjustments and/or performing required repairs.
  • Assure the proper operation of a wide variety of machines and devices including pumps, engines, motors, conveyors, compressors, and laboratory equipment by observing machines in operation and listening to them to locate the source of malfunctions, lubricating and cleaning mechanical machines, dismantling the machines in order to repair or replace inoperative parts such as belts, fans, motors, and pumps, and adjusting the machines to prescribed operating standards or performance rates. Performs preventive maintenance.
  • Repair existing structures according to work orders or verbal instructions by inspecting the work site to determine the materials, equipment, tool requirements, and method to be used; developing a plan or lay out for the project or following a blueprint, sketch or schematic; assembling, fabricating or building and installing materials, equipment, or fixtures as required by the scope of work.
  • Perform basic plumbing work by repairing existing plumbing and pipe lines, replacing washers in valves, installing plumbing fixtures, such as sinks, toilets, water heaters, and connecting them to outlet and inlet pipes by fitting with gaskets, couplings, traps, and valves, and soldering connections to seal joints, and opening clogged drains and stopped-up toilets.
  • Perform basic electrical work by replacing light bulbs, ballasts, faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, breakers, insulators and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures and equipment, installing new conduit, wiring, and electrical machinery, inspecting and testing electrical lighting, power circuits, and equipment, and maintains and repairs existing electrical wiring, equipment, and installations.
  • Assist with documenting the cost of repairs and providing periodic status reports to the designated supervisor regarding the status of work projects.
  • Comply with policies, laws and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials. Contributes to an accident-free work environment by following safety protocols, wearing personal protective equipment, and reporting incidents.
  • Assist custodial staff as needed for emergency cleaning needs.
  • Assist with event set up and tear down of seating, tables, stages, etc., as well as setups for classes.
  • Other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Considered “Critical Personnel” may be called to work at times outside the normal schedule or when the campus is closed because of the position’s responsibility for essential functions such as: power, HVAC, snow removal, and general campus safety,

Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • A high school diploma or the equivalent plus completion of a vocational/technical school or a recognized apprenticeship program in general mechanical maintenance is required.
  • Significant mechanical maintenance experience beyond that required for the position and a demonstrated ability in one of the mechanical trades may be substituted for the required vocational/technical school or apprenticeship.
  • At least three years of successful experience with a strong preference for commercial HVAC, building automation, and electric.
  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and schematics is required. Requires general mechanical ability which includes skills in the use of electrical test equipment, and small hand and power tools, mechanical equipment.
  • A valid drivers license and acceptable driving record in order to operate university vehicles; CDL desired but not mandatory.
  • Self-directed self-taught/independent learner, excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Computer literate in MS Word, Excel and Outlook. Experience with building automation software preferred.

  • Physical Demands: Must be able to lift and transport materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis; prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching on a daily basis; and working in confined spaces. Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual and electrically-powered tools and electrical test equipment, to move throughout campus, including climbing stairs in all buildings, and to work at heights. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which could have work hazards. Scope of the position requires exposure to and use of chemicals, solvents, cleaners, and lubricants common to mechanical work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed. Available for emergency calls on evenings and weekends.
